Depression isn’t just sadness. Sometimes it’s emptiness or hopelessness. Sometimes it’s struggling to get out of bed in the morning. Other times it feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders.
September is National Suicide Prevention Month. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Lifeline offers these #BeTheOneTo steps for communicating with someone who may be suicidal. These steps are supported by evidence in the field of suicide prevention.
Find a Therapist/Support Group
Discussing problems with family or friends and feeling connected to others can create positive emotional health. Having a sense of belonging to one’s culture, or a strong tribal/spiritual bond can be helpful.
Explore some of the possible supports with them – are they currently seeing a mental health professional? Have they in the past? Is this an option for them currently?
