Black Lung Clinic

Open to any coal miner (including Non-Native Americans) who worked 6 months or longer in surface/underground mine from any state!

You are eligible for a free screening through the Black Lung Clinic if you have been a miner for 6 months or longer.  Early diagnosis and medical care can often make a difference in quality of life and long-term survival.

Black Lung Clinic Program

Chilchinbeto Clinic operated by Canyonlands Healthcare provides nationally-recognized medical screening, diagnosis, treatment, education and counseling, and prevention services.

These efforts target miners and their families who present with primary and secondary symptoms as well as medical conditions associated with black lung disease. Translation services are available.

Free screening services include:

  • Physical Exam
  • Audiometry (hearing test)
  • Spirometry (breathing test)
  • Chest X-ray with B-reading for dust disease
  • Oximetry (blood oxygen level)
  • Health education and benefits counseling

What happens after the screening?

You will receive a letter explaining the results of your tests. If screening tests show potential problems, we may recommend further medical evaluation and treatment with your primary care physician, a local healthcare provider, or at National Jewish Health.

What illnesses do miners face?

Exposure to dusts, fumes, smoke, radiation, noise and chemicals place miners at increased risk for several ailments including:

  • Black Lung
  • Silicosis
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Noise-induced hearing loss
  • Bronchitis
  • Lung cancer
  • Tuberculosis
  • Emphysema
