Blood Pressure Check
For adults ages 40 or older, African-Americans, or for those with conditions like obesity that put them at increased risk for hypertension, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends an annual screening. Blood pressure higher than 135/80 mm Hg may be a symptom of diabetes.
-
Cholesterol Check
The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that all adults over the age of 35 have their cholesterol checked every 5 years. This is a tool used to assess your risk for developing heart disease or stroke. If you’re age 20 or older, you should have your cholesterol measured at least once every five years, says the National Institutes of Health.

Blood Glucose Test
People 40 or older who are overweight or obese should be tested for abnormal blood sugar levels, according to a recommendation from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), a panel of medical experts who make suggestions about health screenings and services. If you have a family history of diabetes, or are of a race or ethnicity that’s at particular risk, you may want to start earlier and get screened more often.

Body Mass Index
Excess weight increases your risk for diabetes and heart disease. Your body mass index (BMI) measures your body fat based on your height and weight, and it can determine if you’re overweight or at risk for developing obesity.

Behavioral Health Counseling
Prevention plays a crucial role in addressing mental and/or substance use disorders. One in five adults in the U.S. experiences a mental health issue each year, and according to a SAMHSA report. 15.7 million adults (aged 18 or older) and 2.8 million youth (aged 12 to 17) had a major depressive episode during the past year.
By 2020, mental and substance use disorders will surpass all physical diseases as a major cause of disability worldwide, and drug and alcohol use can lead to other chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.
Lake Powell Medical Center provides care across a wide range of disciplines, including counseling, evaluations, medication management and psychotherapy. Our mental health team provides individual and family therapy in addition to a Grief Support Group and Sand Tray Therapy.

Everyone should make time for healthy habits — regular exercise, brushing and flossing your teeth, stress management, and choosing the right foods. Scheduling routine health screenings, which can detect potential problems early, is one of those habits.
